The present world is very dynamic. There is a growing speed in information access each new day. In the Dell situation, a blogger merely blogged about his experiences with the dell computer. He described how there were lots of hardware malfunctions and many other problems. In the Kryptonite situation, a client actually picked his own lock using just the tip of his pen. He subsequently posted this on a famous forum. The result was a lot of negative commentary on the internet.

The stories shared by the different clients saw both companies realize a sharp drop in sales. This is one of the most important indicators that brand visibility is as important as perception. In fact, dell and kryptonite had no choice but to intervene and offer explanations.

There is always an intrinsic nudge in humans to share a bad story. That would explain why such stories spread like wildfire on the world wide web. It should be the responsibility of each company to monitor information in order to avoid such cases.

Luckily, it is possible to actually monitor online activity that affects the company. It involves monitoring any social media posts that affect the company whether negatively or positively. This entire process is what is referred to as online reputation management. It helps the company to maintain control of customer perception especially the negative ones.
