Make Money using Twitter

If you are serious about using Twitter to promote your business, and make money from your tweets, you will need some management tools to help you achieve your goals.  It is impossible to manage thousands of followers (especially if you use multiple accounts for multiple businesses) without effective management software.  MarketmeTweet is exactly such a tool, allowing you to brand your tweets with YOUR links etc.  Most of the third party managment tools that is available brands YOUR tweet with THEIR link … more traffic for them, and none for you!

MarketmeTweet is the commercial version of TweetBrand, which, while being free, is also a very powerful tool in branding your Tweets, thereby increasing (or creating) brand awareness one tweet at a time.

Please be sure to watch the instruction video (or at least the screenshots) of how you need to install TweetBrand. In short, do the following:

  • Once on the site, click on the “Sign in to Twitter and get your keys” button – it is the blue one below the intruction video, and it is not immediately obvious that this is where you need to click.
  • Log into Twitter using your normal credentials.
  • Register your application by giving it a name and a description. All the fields are required.even if your application website and website is the same. Make sure you select “client” for application type, and select “Read and Write” as the access type. Select “Use Twitter for Login”, fill in the Captcha field, and click “Submit”.
  • Download the application by clinking on the next button “Install Now”.  The application will download, and install.
  • Log into Tweetbrand wit the username and password you signed up with.  (This happens before you are asked for the Key and Secret Key, not afterward as indicated on the screenshots page).
  • Next, you will be presented with the “Key” and “Secret Key” requests, which you have on the “Applications Page” of Twitter.
  • Next you sign in to Twitter USING THE , BLUE SIGN IN BUTTON ABOVE THE USERNAME AND PIN FIELDS, and you have to ALLOW this application to connect to your Twitter account.
  • Next you will be given a PIN which you will need to fill in on the screen of the installation process – it is NOT your Twitter or TweetBrand password!
  • At Last you can tweet using your own brand, to as many accounts as you like, all at the same time!

It is quite easily the best Twitter account management system available!  Having the tools, however, means very little if you don’t know what to do with them.  How exactly do you build a large following, and profit from your following?

One technique I came across that makes sense to me using these products (and stays within the Twitter “Terms of Use” agreement) is to find a heavyweight in your specific niche that has hordes of followers (lets say “Celebrities”, then you would choose someone like Ryan Seacrest @ryanseacrest).  You will see a button in the top left that says “Add all Followers”.   The application will start adding followers one every 2 seconds, up to 1000 followers (the maximum Twitter allows you to add a day).  You should convert about 40% of those followers to follow you – meaning about 400 new followers a day!  It might be hard to find the top people in your niche, so use the website We Follow to get an idea of who the top people in any given niche is. You might be surprised at who you find tops the list for the more obvious niches, like Television & Celebrity … and who has the greatest number of followers of all on Twitter (Currently Ashton Kutcher followed by Britney Spears).

Ok, so now you have the followers in your selected niche.  WHAT NOW?  Having the followers does not mean traffic to your website.  You have to entice your followers to go have a look at what you have on your website, and this is where the rubber meets the road, and where most on-line marketers fall out of the running.  Unless you are selling something like the newest Nike running shoes at a 90% discount, most people will not just visit your site because you are running a “One Time Offer” or “Not-to-be-Missed Promotion” on your site.  In fact, if the first tweet your new-found followers read is purely promotional, the chances are they will “Un-follow” you quicker than what they followed you.  Twitter is about BRAND BUILDING, which in essence is establishing a trust in your followers that they can expect you to have THEIR best interests at heart, and that you consistently live up to your promises.

Let us look at BRAND building in the bigger context.  Coca Cola is simply a sweet black fizzy drink with a HUGE marketing budget.  While their recipe might be secret, and Coca Cola as a result has a singular taste, they certainly are not the only company in the world that can produce something to drink.  Why does Coca Cola then, as opposed to Acme Cooler, have the lion’s share of the fizzy drinks market?  It is the power of BRANDING and BRAND AWARENESS.

Is it then the singular taste of Coca Cola that makes it popular?  While it might seem the logical reason, the taste is secondary to the brand, especially seen that Coca Cola has made a number of variants of  its popular drink, and on the power of the Coca Cola name, had aquired a following for these drinks as well.  FOLLOWING??  Ummm … that sounds SO Twitter, and rightly so it is! Coca Cola’s BRAND is imbued with non-tangibles, and the real reason you land up buy the product has NOTHING to do with the taste.  When you buy a Coke, yes you expect a certain taste, but you are buying for a fleeting moment all the previous times you have had a Coke … with friends, with your favourite tipple, a fondly-remembered holiday or occasion … in short, you are buying a coke for WHAT IT REPRESENTS, not for its taste.  The fact that it tastes the same everytime is the trust that you have built into the brand to be consistent in delivering its promises.

If you have read up to here, you are certainly commited to learning how to use Twitter to build your brand, and by implication, sell your product.  I say it again, Twitter is BRAND BUILDING, not SELLING, and it happens like this:

Your followers need to hear interesting things about the subjects you indicated you are interested in, information that is helpful or engenders trust in what you have to say as being true.  Lets take as an example Tweeting to promote your Cooking / Recipe website.  You might send out the following tweets at intervals:

TIP: Put pinch bicarb in hot oil to prevent your fritters sticking to each other or the pot.

TIP: Use left-over pumpkin to make delicious fritters, seasoned with cinnamon sugar.

TIP: Put vanilla pods and cinnamon sticks in container with white sugar and leave – amazing!

Are you getting the idea?  Establish yourself as an authority that gives good information FOR FREE, and your followers will begin to trust your tweets, and look forward to the next one.  Pretty soon you will have hordes of visitors to your site, which if you have monetized it skillfully (and that is beyond the scope of this article), you should be seeing regular sales.

Let us tell you how to make money using Twitter, and still comply with Twitter’s T.O.S!
